Most UNC System institutions participate in a Carolina Consortium Transformational Agreement with Wiley, one of the world’s largest publishers. For calendar year 2023, this agreement yielded 773 approved open access articles across all participating institutions, with 452 of them authored by UNC System researchers. Wiley’s average article processing charge is $3,216, which means that the resulting open access articles have a value of nearly $2.5M! Benefits for researchers include greater use of their publications–according to Wiley’s own studies, open access articles have 3.6X the number of full-text downloads than subscription articles, and OA articles enjoy a 60% citation advantage.
